A seminar on “Sexual Harassment at Workplace and on Campus” was held at the National College of Arts, Lahore. The seminar was attended by a large number of students and faculty. It was participated in by Justice Naisra Javed Iqbal, who is a former judge of Lahore High Court and former President of Supreme Court Bar Association, Ms. Hina Gilani, Advocate of Supreme Court of Pakistan & specializes in Human Rights Litigation and internationally recognized Human Rights activist, Ms. Bushra Khaliq who is a women’s rights activist and associated with various organizations established for the protection of women’s rights, Mr. Saleh Azam Advocate High Court & Faculty Member School of Law, University of Management and Technology (UMT) and Ms. Sarah Suhail, who is a member of Feminist Collective, human rights activist and Faculty member in the department of Cultural Studies, NCA. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Salima Hashmi the former principal of the National College of Arts and now a member Board of Governors of the National College of Arts.
The purpose of the seminar was to create awareness about what constitutes Sexual Harassment. The participants also explained the laws which have been promulgated by the legislature regarding sexual harassment and also specifically pointed out the various legal redressal that have been laid down. The various sexual harassment cases that have been lodged and their outcome were also debated by the learned participants. At the end the questions were invited from the audience and the students and faculty then asked a number of questions and sought clarification on a number of issues pertaining to the topic. Principal NCA in his concluding remarks stressed the need to learn about the sensitive issue and need to focus on improving professional practices in order to ensure a protective environment for women professionals.
