Workshop – Tayiba Iram 'Batik'

Learners in the Batik workshop experienced a timeless wax resist dyeing tradition that continues to inspire artisans across cultures. Guided by Tayiba Iram, participants explored how wax, dye, and fabric come together to form layered, expressive surfaces rich with colour and texture. The workshop encouraged each participant to approach Batik not just as a craft, but as a form of storytelling, where every stroke of wax and each shift of pattern carries personal meaning.

Through demonstrations and practice, attendees learned to work with tjanting tools, experiment with mark making, and understand the nuances of resist dyeing. From pattern development to final dye application, the process allowed participants to create their own bespoke textile pieces, reflecting both tradition and their individual artistic voice.

The workshop celebrated slow making, sensory experience, and the intimate connection between creator and cloth, highlighting Batik as both an art form and a memory making practice.
