FINE ARTS

The Department of Fine Arts offers a four-year Bachelor degree in Fine Arts. Many graduates of this department have contributed significantly towards the development of art education, their own art practices and have been widely recognized for their laudable efforts in teaching, mentoring and promoting their students.

The Department of Fine Arts is the foremost programme for artistic and intellectual discourse and activity in the country. As part of the programme, leading professionals contribute through their teaching and mentorship and provide both agency and space to students, such that they develop into successful creative individuals with independent aesthetic choices. Our objective is for our students to achieve deeper analytical ability, the freedom to imagine and the vision to create. We help our students to become practitioners with a meaningful understanding of tradition and of the contemporary.

To attain this, the Department of Fine Arts offers courses in studio and theory, and is divided into Majors of four different disciplines; Miniature Painting, Painting, Printmaking & Digital Media and Sculpture. The department is futher supported with courses in Drawing, Studio Electives from other departments and Fine Arts Seminar Courses.

Each student of Fine Arts, in the 2nd Year is introduced to all 4 Major subjects, before choosing one to pursue in 3rd and 4th year. During this period, Studio Drawing and Fine Art Seminar contribute towards developing an individual approach.

The Department of Fine Arts, in accordance with the vision of NCA, facilitates students to enrol in Elective Courses from other departments of the institution. Recognizing the need for a multi-disciplinary pedagogy, the programme is structured to encourage exposure and experience beyond a student’s selected course of studies in their Major Subject.

DEPARTMENT OF MINIATURE PAINTING

At this department, students are taught the skills and traditional techniques of miniature painting. They are encouraged to develop an awareness and sensibility of contemporary practices of this art form. They learn the making of wasli (traditional paper), handmade brushes, and preparation of colours. The use of the traditional along with contemporary approaches expands the vision of students and equips them with technical possibilities.

DEPARTMENT OF PAINTING

Courses in Painting introduce students to a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, water colour, mix media, tempera, and new media. Students are encouraged to investigate and communicate their ideas through multi-dimensional approaches, while honing their ability to understand and employ a range of mediums and materials and developing individualized techniques of making.

DEPARTMENT OF SCULPTURE

Sculpture as a medium has moved from making three dimensional objects to installations, videos, nontangible materials accessed through the sense of touch, taste, sound and light. The multi dimensionality of this process links with technology and materials which are traditional as well as contemporary. Students are encouraged to explore materials and techniques available in their surrounding so they can experiment with a wide range of ideas, images and techniques and open up new frontiers of expression.
