Deepa Mehta

Renowned Indian-born Canadian filmmaker and screenwriter Deepa Mehta, OC OOnt, visited Lahore in connection with the Lahore Literary Festival (LLF), where she participated as a panelist. During her visit, she also visited the National College of Arts, Lahore, and met Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Murtaza Jafri, marking a significant moment for the institution’s academic and creative community.

Deepa Mehta is internationally celebrated for her seminal Elements Trilogy; Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005), with Water earning a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Her body of work is widely studied for its bold narrative voice, socio political engagement, and cinematic craft.

On this occasion, a formal understanding was established between Deepa Mehta and the National College of Arts to archive her cinematic works at NCA as part of LLF 2026 initiatives. The archive will serve educational and research purposes, providing access to students and faculty of the Faculty of Film & Television, as well as approved researchers. The collaboration envisions the gradual development of an academic archive that may include films and selected creative and research materials, ensuring respectful preservation and proper crediting.
